To see Phoenix fade away this year as other acts take their place, like happened to Cut Copy after their massive 2008. In the middle of prepping for this record release, the band has been filling out local Denton cut-n-shoots and sold out Dan’s Silverleaf before they even played a note. Two nights later they played a show we presented with The Spooks and Wild Harem–it was a devil of an experience. Perhaps. Or perhaps it will just be the year that U.S. Girls came onto the scene with a wonderfully lo-fi experimental album that fuses basic tribal elements with haunting synth and her own raw emotions. (Think a more intense and less-cutesy tUnE-YaRdS.) Go Grey is the second full-length release by Megan Remy, who under the moniker U.S. Girls makes very impulsive-driven songs that typically use only one or very few sounds and might seem just as appropriate in a modern art museum as in your iTunes. Like I said, this is experimental stuff, and I don’t mean “Lady Gaga wore Kermit the Frog heads” experimental. The answer is this fantastic remix, which I can only describe as smooth and sultry. This is one of those interesting remixes that’s definitely got a great dance beat, but one thats probably best suited for a one-on-one up close and personal slow grind. With the plethora of in your face over the top remixes out there (which, don’t get me wrong, I love just as much as the next guy), it’s really refreshing to hear something like this that takes a song to a whole new and unimaginable place without blowing the roof off. If you liked this one, get excited because FM Attack is cranking away on some new remixes and is even reported to be releasing an album this spring. I often listen to alt-rock records from the 90’s and reflect wistfully on how no one produces like that anymore, with the monolithic guitars charging out of both speakers right into your fucking face, like a huge pane of glass attempting to pin you to the wall. The production is really what makes this record, mostly unadorned, the drums crunchy and overdriven, the guitars a dense sludge of indie-post-indie-rawk, yet still floating widely around Sadie’s sardonic vocals. Yeah, the singer’s a girl, and she has a sweet voice, but don’t call her twee. She sings like she’d be sticking her tongue out if she could, and if you tried to make eyes at her while she’s on stage, she’d probably roll them deliberately at you, and considering the gloriously pulverizing noise she can wring out of her instrument (punctuated by quieter moments of breathless tension) while rhyming “supernova” with “nice to know ya,” you want to avoid fucking with her like you would Jerry Cantrell. In spite of the confrontational posturing, though, this music is pop perfection – the classic Pixies loud-soft dynamics given new melodic life by the band’s Britpop inflections; matter of fact, “Mr. Benjamin Watson” is probably the best song Blur never got to write for their self-titled album, and probably half of these songs could sound like Leisure with balls if it wasn’t all so gloriously punk rock

The Thin Kids – ‘23 Things I’d Change About The Brisbane Music Scene’

Dance

Electronic

Music

brisbane-based

first-arriving

folk

new music

song

stirs-curiosity

wikipedia-entry

The Thin Kids – ‘23 Things I’d Change About The Brisbane Music Scene’ ( mp3 ) You probably already know what this song is about just from reading the title – it’s not meant to be clever or ironic, just an accurate description of the lyrical content therein. What you might not know is that The Thin Kids is a new project from (in)famous British music critic Everett True (pictured above), now a restless Brisbane-based academic and “fading critic,” mainly of Pitchfork and Animal Collective. The band also features actual Brisbane folk in Edward Guglielmino, Margaret Collins and Scotty Regan – but it’s Everett who has the wikipedia entry so, you know, he gets some special mention. Plus it’s him doing most of the ranting in the above song. The tune is apparently named for an open letter True published upon first arriving in Brisbane that singled a number of venues, publications and bands as being fairly crap – fellow Thin Kids member Ed G among them. But then other Thin Kids member Margaret Collins supposedly helped them make peace etc etc. I’m not sure how much of the bio on their MySpace is for shiz but, like this song and most things True touches, it stirs curiosity and interest regardless. Head over there to hear some of the other tracks available for streaming (two of which are called ‘We Never Rehearse’). The Thin Kids make their live debut at the Troubadour in Brisbane the 24th Feb. I assume Mr True won’t have see cause to complain about this through song, but I wouldn’t put it past him. www.mypace.com/thethinkids

[MP3] Her Magic Wand: “Mistakes”

Electronic

Music

Pop

despite

fine-electronic

Magic Wands

unassuming-gem-

video

wand-on-myspace

Braden J McKenna is an interesting character. I’ve never had an email from him which was much longer than a single sentence. Even after naming his Navigator album in my top two favourite albums of 2009, all I heard from him was a one line ‘thanks very much, here’s something new we just released’. There’s absolutely no need to say any more than that, of course, and in fact any sort of thanks is really nice, but I’m not just talking about emails. Look at the MySpace pages of both Navigator and Weighted Pines, and there’s not exactly a surfeit of information. The label on which all of this brilliant music is released is called Magic Goat, and their website has recently been redesigned to actually include less information. Have a look at that site and try and imagine anything more minimalist. This music is described as being inspired by nineties US indie bands, and it’s certainly a different animal to the fuzzy full band setup of the Navigator record. The guitar here is more pecked at, often producing quite a staccato sound, compared to the distorted background of noise which characterised Bad Children. The percussion seems to have a little more rattle to it as well. In general, though, this, for all I love an awful lot of it, does need something of a health warning: it really, really is fucking rough. Some of the tracks, like Twentyfive and Small Town, for example, are extremely lovely, and show that McKenna’s voice has the capacity to be tremendously sympathetic when he chooses it to be, but there’s still an awful lot of cacophonous fuzz on this album which will probably put all but the most rapid fans of confrontationally messy recording off completely. A couple of songs get close to being two minutes in length, but only a couple. The rest last roughly a minute or so, and that’s yer lot so, for all you might think that some of the more abstract pieces are a bit frivolous, there is absolutely no buggering about here at all. None. So if you are starting to feel like you want to run a million miles from the attention whoring on things like the X-Factor, or from the polished tedium of Vampire Weekend, or the desperate cackling of T4, or the appalling smugness of Jules Holland, then this is about as far from anything even slightly commercial as you can get. Everything’s downloadable for nothing from the label site: Magic Goat Music, a bizarre oasis of talent from Bone Valley, Utah, one of the most unexpected labels and unexpected places and unlikely groups of people I could possibly imagine.
