( photo via ) It’s been months since I’ve caught any words from The Lawds and, just yesterday, I get an email with a new track. It seems Richard has relocated away from London and even “got a drummer and bassist and everything – it’ll be like one of those real bands off the TV!” Well, if you thought their months away would have given them time to polish/clean up their sound, you’d be wrong. “You Keep Me Waiting” is just as raw (if not more so) and honest as ever–and that’s exactly why we like these guys.
When it’s time for the lo-fi indie pop Olympics this year, it looks like the Americans are the early favourites. They’re already got the established big litters like Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Vivian Girls strutting around like the medals are theirs already. The new blood is on the way too as the likes of Harlem are being considered for elibibility to compete. But what of team GB? Well, we have plenty of excellent, excitable youngsters like Internet Forever well up for a go. But best of all we have the ultimate secret weapon in the shape of Veronica Falls . With them on our side, we can’t lose. mp3: Veronica Falls - Found Love in a Graveyard The 7 inch is out this week. Buy from Pure Groove

Sorry if I missed this track when it first came out and it was a giant deal but I’m human, deal with it. For those of you who, like me, missed it the first time around I present Hijack ’s fantastically house-y remix of Blatta & Inesha ’s ‘Blow Up’. And it was smart to keep it pared down to only nine tracks, because there isn't any filler to be found. Perfect, colorful video for a perfect, colorful single. "Rocket" will be made available on iTunes next week. Oops! Thanks, Daft Monk , for pointing out that "Rocket" has been on iTunes since late January. My bad

By Pete Donahue Since I latched on to their 2001 single “ Whatever Happened to My Rock ‘n’ Roll (Punk Rock Song), ” I’ve always held Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in high regard. I don’t own a motorcycle or a leather jacket, but when I listen to the band’s ragged amalgam of rock and roll, blues, americana and folk, I get a glimpse of what it must have been like to roll with Velvet Underground in Manhattan back in the late-60s. To have been right there with people like Lou Reed who helped shape rock and roll into the coolest kind of chic I can imagine, decked out in black leather jackets, heeled boots and sunglasses, regardless of what time it is. For me, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are today’s embodiment of proper rock and roll. The kind carried with just the right amount of vintage swagger that doesn’t reek of hipster irony. There may be a long list of younger bands one could use to remind me that rock and roll hasn’t gone anywhere, but those bands haven’t come close to mastering the ability to make you fantasize about living in an era when rock and roll was just an insubordinate, snotty teenager who didn’t give a fuck if you liked it or not? The kind of rock and roll that lives on embedded in the tattered cement and bricks of cities like New York, Detroit, San Francisco and London. Beat the Devil’s Tattoo is the sixth and latest LP by the band and is probably one of, if not their most complete record to date. And with over 10 years in the rock and roll rat race, B.R.M.C. have done so right in the face of some pretty unsettling events for a band. After a reluctance to license their music for commercial use (ahem, but “ Spread Your Love ” in a Miracle Whip commercial was a terrible idea, RCA), they were dropped by their major label – for the second time. With the departure of original drummer, Nick Jago, and a grueling tour schedule that eventually left the band without permanent addresses, some bands would call it a day. But if rock and roll is all you know, then you do the only thing you know how. Recorded in a house/recording studio owned by The Cobbs in Philadelphia (making a record while squatting – very rock and roll), B.R.M.C. sound as if they’ve actually welcomed all the shitty things that’s happened to them over the last couple of years. From the first verse of the title-track that opens the album, it’s clear the band will be damned if you’re not going to listen up this time around: “Your body’s aching, every bone is breaking/Nothing seems to shake it, it just keeps holding on.” Sounding like a Wild West-meets eastern European gypsy death march, equal parts twangy acoustic guitar leads backed by fuzzy electric guitars and a maddening rhythmic stomp, the song sounds more like a band’s declaration of survival than lead single, but either way, it’s a proper way to start an album. The up-tempo “ Conscience Killer ” impressively rings like a frenzied ensemble of buzzsaw guitars and thick, pounding drums, with bassist/vocalist Robert Levon Been and guitarist Peter Hayes trading blazing statements like “It don’t mean all that much, does it boy?/We never really had a choice” with a cocky snarl that almost dares any music industry bigwig to stand in their way. If the music industry machine was set on rolling over Black Rebel Cycle Club, to band shows two songs into their new album that they’re not interested in being just another major label casualty. It is equal parts furious, desperate and awesome. Fans of the band’s stripped-down, Americana/folk Howl and Howl Session EP are not to be disappointed, either. As the band have eeked out a living effortlessly dabbling in various roots music genres, “The Toll” is a damned near perfect personal statement about life

It's from the British one-man band's new album Giants . Man, Chicane will forever remind me of some really awesome play I got in Summer 2000 to the tune of the Bryan Adams -featuring smasheroo "Don't Give Up." But, really—enough about me masturbating for three months. Here's that video. And crank this shit loud .

There's something about this London threesome's dark and hypnotizing melancholic non-chalant fuck-all garage pop that had me hooked.
In their effort to deliver a more ‘mature’ sound on their second album, Manchester’s The Courteeners instead give us Falcon , an overly safe, bland dadrock affair that relies too heavily on repetitive, unimaginative choruses and very little on authenticity and heart. The band apparently drew a lot of inspiration from touring America while writing the songs that make up this record, and it shows in quite a negative way as they extract all of the vapid, overdone cliches that made UK acts like Coldplay and Snow Patrol such a success in the U.S.; the bloated emotionalism of the chorus that is just begging for a crowd singalong, hackneyed lyrics that accompany simple, pedestrian chord progressions, and an underlying desire for their songs to be anthemic without the spirit and soul that is required. In the end, these tracks sound hollow simply because they are-it’s songwriting by the numbers and quite frankly I’m surprised that Liam Fray, after fatuously titling the first song on Falcon ‘The Opener,’ didn’t just continue on naming them ‘The Second Song’ and so-forth.

I don’t know if it’s supposed to be taken this way, but this record is great fun. The otherwordly falsetto vocals and slightly over the top guitar melodrama just give it an air of exuberance. It also seems to have the right balance between self-indulgence and discipline; it may sound a mite proggy in places, but it’s all still pretty tightly put together, and there’s barely any freeform noodling. A little like early Interpol and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the rhythm may not seem complicated, but it thumps away consistently through everything, anchoring the whole album extremely well. Having listened to it a good dozen or so times through I still feel a little ambivalent about the second half of The Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night, however. It seems to lose pace and just a little bit of urgency. There’s almost a sprightliness to the first half, despite the heaviness of the noise, but later on it seems to become a little leaden, wich is a shame, because every time I listen to it I feel like I am building up to absolutely love the album, only to sort of deflate half way through. Over the course of an hour this album drifts from boisterous, somewhat epic indie rock to what I suppose I would call a kind of increasingly moody post-rock, if I were forced to try and put it into words. And consequently it seems to lose its momentum, just at the wrong time. Nell'ultima puntata di polaroid alla radio ho commesso il grave errore di suonare la loro cover di I Try di Macy Gray e ancora non sono riuscita a levarmela dalla testa.
(Victoria Jacob for SUP Magazine) The buzz started in late 2009, but Beach Fossils continues to be a band to look out for in 2010. Their Daydream 7" has quickly become some of my favorite new music this year. The 7", co-released by Captured Tracks and Woodsist is the perfect roadtrip soundtrack that envokes feelings of nostaligia and sun-drenched days at the beach. The Brooklyn-based band has been tearing up the road as of late touring with the likes of Surfer Blood, Real Estate, and The Beets. They have a full-length slated for release this April. If the tracks I've heard are any indication, this project from Dustin Payseur will only garner praise. MOKB is excited to have them playing our Friday Pumps & A Bump day party this year at SXSW. Look for a full-lineup and more details in the coming week. Dont argue with me on this. Brazilian remix artists The Twelves are without doubt my favourite remixers at the moment. There’s none better for taking a tune and just giving it a little disco twist that gets all the girls (and me) shaking our thang.

If you haven’t yet heard “Eyelid Moves”, the recently released debut album from Phantogram , then you’re missing out on one of my favorite albums so far this year. The album is a mix of so many different styles that all work together to create one cohesive album thats creative and experimental but still completely accessible. But my favorite on the album is probably “As Far As I Can See”, which starts out with a catchy chopped up sample presumably of a Motown hit. But instead of hearing someone rap over the sample, we get the exact opposite, the soft and enchanting vocals of Sarah Barthel. Though her voice is in stark contrast to the phrenetic sample, the two compliment each other perfectly, just as all of the different songs on the album compliment each other. The band has a few tour dates out west and for SXSW and will be embarking on tour with The Antlers in April. Catch them if you can.

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984 1984 Holland Front Cover "Sidewalk Talk" is a single by American record producer John "Jellybean" Benitez, released in 1984 by EMI Records. The song was originally written by Madonna during the beginning of her career. She granted out this song to Jellybean in 1985, as he was a great collaborator for her during this time. 1984 was a rising year for Madonna, as she was continuously on airplay both on radio and on television, on the cover of the magazines, on front displays on record stores, and in every media related to music and show business. The artist credit of this recording is only for Jellybean. The vocals from Catherine Buchanan (nicknamed "Catt") were acknowledged only on the additional information on the disc sleeve. However, Jellybean tried to take advantage of Madonna's popularity and credited her for the writing of the song on the cover of the single. She also has vocals on its chorus and she sings some solo verses. "Sidewalk Talk" reached the #1 position on the U.S.
